The Evening photography experience at Bawdsey Hall takes place in one of two purpose built hides in the grounds of our private nature reserve. As an evening session, this allows you to get within meters of some of Britain’s most elusive and cherished wild nightlife, whilst taking full advantage of the illuminated setup that we have to offer.
Our purpose built Wildlife Photography area centres around a large reflection pond and wildflower garden. The area is constantly lit with low powered led lights allowing the nocturnal wildlife to gradually become accustomed to the light and feel comfortable visiting the pond. This area is regularly visited by our resident Badgers, Polecats, Muntjac, Foxes, Tawny Owls, Herons and many other creatures.
The session will typically start just before dusk and will end around midnight, lasting for roughly 4 - 6 hours - however timings will change depending on the time of year and depending on the current animal behaviour. We operate throughout all weather conditions as this offers the chance to capture wildlife within different atmospheres as they endure the elements.
Around the hide, night-vision CCTV cameras have been set up and positioned at key locations so we can see the animals that are in the grounds as they make their way to the pond. This allows photographers to spot when something is approaching so they can be ready for their arrival. This is a unique photography hide feature that has helped many photographers ensure they don’t miss out on any of the action.
There are 2 different hide options for your Evening Experience; One being the Sunken Hide - Situated several feet underground, this hide brings you eye level with nature and provides an undisturbed view along the waterline of our large Wildlife Reflection Pond - Perfect for shooting reflection portraits.
The second option is the Ground Level hide - This hide is for those photographers wanting an expansive view of the Wildlife Photography area. The Wildlife Reflection Pond can be photographed from this hide however the photographs will be taken from a higher level and not eye level with the subjects. This hide is ideal for Tawny Owl flight shots. (please note this is only possible during some seasons, ask for further information)
Both of the hides are also large enough to host a group of photographers and come fully equipped with comfortable heated seats, Wifi access, Tea and Coffee facilities and plenty of space to stretch your legs if needed. David will be on hand to support you through the evening and guide you as you seek out wildlife. The idyllic surrounding and opportunity to draw on David’s wealth of photographic knowledge and technical experience creates the perfect package.
In addition to this course, we also offer a variety of different lenses for hire to help get you those different perspectives that you may not have access to with your own kit.
